Dr Michał Szczepański
was born in 1974. When he was six years old, he began to learn to play the piano in Karol Szymanowski State Comprehensive School of Music of 1st and 2nd Level in Wrocław, which he completed with an honourable mention, all the time being Mrs. Janina Butorowa’s student. In 1997 he completed piano studies at Karol Lipiński
Academy of Music in Wrocław
in the class of Prof. Włodzimierz Obidowicz – a diploma with an honourable mention. At present, he is working as an assistant at the same Academy of Music.
Already in the Secondary School, he won five first prizes in different national competitions. After competition auditions he was awarded scholarships three times by the Child’s Art Foundation, twice by the National Found For Children, three times by the Fryderyk Chopin’s Society (1991,1992, 1993), and by the F. Liszt’s Society in Wrocław (1991, 1995, 1997). In 1995 he won the 3rd prize in the I Fryderyk Chopin International Competition in Marienbad (The Czech Republic). In the same year, he was a participant of the 13th Chopin Competition in Warsaw.
In 2000 he received 2nd ex-aequo prize at the 1st Halina Czerny-Stefańska International Piano Competition in Aigasawa in Japan (there was no 1st prize awarded) and the audience award. In 2001 he received 2nd prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. He has played several times during the International Chopin Festivals in Duszniki Zdrój. He played in the “Festival of Polish Piano Playing” in Słupsk, at the “Week of Talents” in Tarnów, and at the “Internationales Musikfest Kreuth” Festival in Germany.
Many times he developed his skills at international master courses working with such professors as: W. Mierzanow, A. Jasiński, R. Bakst. The artist is leading an active artistic life, giving concerts both in Poland and abroad. He performed in Germany, the Check Republic, Italy, England, Russia, Switzerland, and in the United States.
He has recorded for radio and television stations in Poland and Germany. Since December 2002 he has been a Chairman of the
Józef Hofmann’s Society .
As a teacher, he has also had many successes so far. His students have won 30 prizes at different piano competitions (including 15 first prizes).
